Day 7: Happy 60th Anniversary!

WBC: 0.5
Platelets: 63
Lbs lost: 8

Richard and I send out a huge Happy 60th Anniversary to Richard's parents. We're sorry we can't be with you and all your friends and family to celebrate your anniversary! The nurses have asked if you wouldn't mind sharing your secrets!

We love you. Have loads of fun and a drink or two for us!

(Now back to regular programming.)
Yesterday and today were pretty good days. Boredom and occasional nausea were the only spoilsports. For dinner today, Richard ate two servings of ice cream and an entire half of a turkey sandwich! There was dancing in the halls over that one.

Alissa sent Richard a bag-o-goodies, sans Scoobysnax...

and Daniel brought him an electric shaver. Richard can't use a razor on those remaining stubborn facial hairs, but the shaver gnaws away at them without nicking the skin.

Nurses' attention has shifted from Richard's food intake to mouth sores. His mouth is now the center of attention. At each shift change, the new nurse will come into the room, reach for the blood pressure cuff, and ask, "How is your mouth?" They peer inside and nod their heads knowingly. They keep expecting fever and mouth sores, but nothing so far. Morphine is ordered and ready to be administered when the sores pop up. I hope they never arrive and that Richard stays healthy during the rest of his hospital stay (1 to 1-1/2 weeks)! Five mouth rinses a day and hypervigilant bacteria patrol may be helping, but we'll see.

Final note: Richard continues to make progress on exercising, and we're up to six hall laps, three times a day. Next stop: Mr. Universe pageant.

We, too, will be missing THE PARTY today. Glad to 'see' the both of you 'joining in' the festivities - we may have to call everyone later.

Looks and sounds like you're doing well, Richard. Keep up the good work! I'm so glad that my folks may have the opportunity to visit you this next week! I'll have them say 'hi!' for me!

Love from Lyon!

OK . . . I'm glad to see you're learning what I've known all my life - ice cream is a health food and the body knows it. You see, the body intuitively discerns what it needs to regain its health and, obviously, mashed potatoes and gravy are not it. Loaded with calcium, a delight to the tongue, and boosting numerous additives to enhance the mood, one should inbibe this miracle food at every opportunity, expecially when under the weather. Note that the health-promoting properties of ice cream are enhanced by the addition of copious quantities of cocao bean derivatives (per Webster: "The nutritious seeds (cacao beans) of this tree, from which cocoa and chocolate are made." Between the laps and ice cream you should be out in record time. When you do get discharged, Ben & Jerry will be there to celebrate. Have a great day.

Now THAT is a real smile, I knew Dad felt better when he wanted to keep talking on the phone to me for 30+minutes, but now I can see he physically looks like he is feeling better too! Can't wait to see you both next week.
XOXOXOX
Kris

I love the pictures! Aunt Robin, you look beautiful! Still don't know how you find things to do in the hospital that long, but maybe that's why Uncle Richard looks so dang excited about a Scooby Doo bag. Love you guys.
